AV case study, university of hull

As part of a sophisticated operation within the brand new modular building, GVAV undertook a full AV fit-out over two floors between December 2022 and January 2023. The installation, which was defined by problem solving and technical solutions, included two large computer labs and a large phased array induction loop.

Overcoming challenges

Despite a delay to the project starting, the modular construction meant that the building progressed rapidly and GVAV responded with our usual flexibility, amended schedules to suit and completed the project to the new deadline delivering a collaborative AV solution the University could be rightly proud of.

Additionally, due to the ongoing global supply chain issues faced by so many there were several logistics/hardware availability challenges which we were able to adapt to and address for the customer. While this made it difficult to obtain certain equipment required for this fit-out, much of this was offset by meticulous planning and advanced procurement by GVAV’s procurement and project teams.

For example, when backordered control processors were unavailable, virtual control (Crestron VC-4) was added as a substitute. Similarly NVX units were originally planned for this project. However, a pragmatic approach had to be taken again due to global supply constraints and therefore the system was re-designed around a BluStream AVoIP solution as an alternative technology.

This ensured that the project could proceed without any delays and that the AV system could be installed as per the customer's requirements.

A high-spec AV solution

Crestron control technology features heavily within this new installation, with presentation switchers, touchscreens, input control modules and lighting controllers key components in each computer lab.

Around the rooms, a total of 26 Panasonic 49” displays were installed and mounted with Unicol tilting wall mounts across a Blustream AVoIP system, giving the presenter full, flexible control.

The Panasonic D-LED displays have 4K high resolution capability and are a light weight, scalable solution designed for 24-hour operation if required.

Both rooms are fitted with custom Dalen Ruby 2 Lecterns which neatly house much of the technical and control equipment, allowing for a seamless experience for University staff presenting and bringing their own devices. Wolfvision VZ3neo UHD visualisers are also integrated.

For audio, seven pairs of Extron FF20T low-profile ceiling speakers and two Extron XPA 2001 100v line amplifiers were installed, providing full sound coverage across each room for students.

Also installed across the computer labs:

  • CP Electronics occupancy sensors and DALI lighting control
  • Sennheiser wireless lavalier mic kits
  • Audio Technica ES9450 mics
  • Magewell video capture cards

Another happy client

AV installation

Despite challenges faced, this project, headed up by GVAV’s Project Manager Lee Payton, we were able to provide a range of technical solutions to ensure that the project was completed on time and to the highest standard.

Tapping into a wealth of internal experience and resources, the GVAV Technical Team adapted to the challenges as they arose to provide a seamless and fully functional AV system that met the University’s requirements in this new high-spec facility.

With these comprehensive facilities enhanced by a flexible and collaborative AV system, the new DAIM building will become an important asset to the University of Hull, adding even more value for their students and enhancing their experience during their time studying.

“The overall feedback is very positive on this, the department are very happy and the University as a whole is quite proud of this teaching facility.
From an AV perspective, it’s all working really well on Crestron VC-4 virtual control and Blustream AV over IP.

Thank you again for working around the delays etc and fitting in engineers where you can, it is much appreciated”
