The University of Bristol’s Wills Memorial Building is an iconic, historic venue. Bombed during the Bristol Blitz in 1940, it was later restored in the 1960’s to Oatley’s original design. The impressive interiors feature a sweeping double stone staircase and carved stone vaulted ceilings. The Great Hall itself compromises of carefully carved oak interiors and panelled walls, the impressive and flexible interior makes it an exceptional event space, perfectly suited to host Graduation awards ceremonies, conferences and exhibitions.
GVAV were tasked with implementing updated audio-visual solutions for the University of Bristol in the Grade 1 listed building, the Great Hall. The previous AV set up proved out of date and difficult to use, consisting of a 4m wide projection screen that was wheeled onto the stage when required and an inconveniently placed projector on the balcony at the back of the hall. Due to building restrictions, the project required an extensive surveying process to analyse the possibilities for an improved AV set up. Drilling in to any of the historic wood was understandably forbidden, as such, to minimise work on the building interior, all existing cables were retained and connected to the new AV systems.
Specialist AV in a listed building.
An incredibly specialist installation, incorporating a Penny Hydraulics winch system, implemented through the curved dome in the top of the attic space above the extensive ceilings. The steel drop-down wire system is controllable from the ground, allowing for slow release of the projection screen when required. Completed by GVAV, the custom Screens International Major Pro-C Tensioned electric screen, measures at 6000mm x 3370mm, ideal for large scale presentations and events. Featuring a hand-painted custom finish using the selected RAL code to ensure a sympathetic finish to the surrounding building. To complete this top class set up, a 20,000 Lumens Epson EB-L20000U projector was installed on the top balcony fitted on a TopTec Specialist Projector mount solution, out of the way from sight and touch.
Crestron control for complicated cabling.
The entire system is operated on the existing Cat 5E infrastructure as the cable routes were extremely complicated, this is facilitated using Crestron NVX AVOIP technology for video, audio and enables ethernet control of the various AV equipment situated in the three locations (Front Lectern, Projection Booth & Projector control).
Taking a sympathetic approach to the works required, GVAV were able to provide all the flexible functionality needed from the solution, whilst working within the constraints and confines of such a magnificent, listed building
The project was completed between December 2020 to February 2021 and the final solution provides a flexible and impressive set up, ideal for University occasions.
"GVAV took all the stress and worry out of this project, talking me through all the stages, and have left us with a superb install... I am, needless to say, very happy with the install, those who have seen the system in use have been very complimentary about the new AV, I only wish we had done it sooner! Throughout, I have been very impressed with GVAV team’s professionalism, their attention to detail and the fact they genuinely care about the quality of their work."
